CDS has developed a number of our own businesses, called social enterprises, to provide pre-employment training to individuals who want some work experience before applying for a job at a traditional business and to provide meaningful employment to individuals with significant barriers who just want to work a couple hours a week.
Participants in our social enterprises benefit in many ways from their employment, from connecting to networks in the community, to building skills in a job that they choose to do.
But the value of the social enterprises CDS operates reaches far beyond the individuals who work within these businesses. Many of these jobs are out in the community and are helping to change perceptions about and create inclusion for people with barriers to traditional employment.
The City of Trail Landscaping & Downtown Crew provides paid employment for up to 16 individuals throughout the year.
Our Gyro Park Concession Stand is open from May through September and provides 20+ individuals with a training allowance while they build their employability skills, technical skills and self-confidence.
Thrifty Treasures, our thrift store, provides a training allowance to 12 individuals who learn valuable skills in customer relations, cash handling and keeping stock organized.
Our wood shop provides two kinds of craft-based employment to a dozen people who receive a training allowance to develop their skills. In the actual wood shop, individuals learn how to build solid wood furniture and household items. Once finished, the wood products move to our store where they are stained or painted for customers.
Secure Shred is our very first business and has been in operation since <YEAR>. This employment creation initiative is very active with ten contracts within the community. Two individuals earn training allowances working one day a week, picking up the materials to be shredded and shredding them at the CDS office.
CDS graciously acknowledges the Vancouver Foundation for its core support to all of our social enterprise businesses.
