Individuals within our Career Development Services “City Crew” program gain valuable work experience and a sense of accomplishment while working from mid-March to the end of November. The individuals working in this program gain a sense of pride in the fact that they’re working at a real job and earn a fair wage. With a long-standing contract with the City of Trail and the solid support of unionized city workers, we have provided a solid base to develop new skills and confidence and to contribute to the economy of our community.
The crew spends five days a week weed whacking and cleaning up throughout the parks, hills, waterways and stairs within the Trail area. In the spring and fall we pay close attention to the many miles of drainage ditches in West Trail assisting to avert any floods. We take great pride in the beautification of the City of Trail and even assisted the Communities in Bloom committee to help Trail win the 2006 national competition.
A sub-project of city crew is our “Downtown Crew.” The downtown crew is responsible for sweeping and picking up garbage on our sidewalks, parking lots, alleys, amenity areas, and street corners in our main downtown core area. Crew work 4 hours a day, 2 days a week.
All crew members learn valuable new skills:
- Punctuality and time management
- Responsibility (to the City, to CDS and to ourselves)
- Communication and team work
- Decision-making and setting priorities
- Setting goals
